The 'big topics' for virtualisation

Virtualised services are becoming ever more dominant and businesses need to assess their ability to adopt them as a core IT strategy, it has been suggested.

Commentator Chris Farrow notes on ZDNet that commercial companies, vendor firms and industry analysts are all predicting significant growth in the takeup of virtual network operator services.

However, in order to maximise return on investment and streamline business communications, firms should look to address a number of key areas facing IT compliance teams when switching to virtual operations.

The first step is "discovery and inventory", which involves itemising the usage of virtual services across the network to maintain secure communications.

Next, businesses are advised to establishing an auditing strategy to keep track of virtualised machines, with a separation of critical assets also identified as a priority for compliance teams.

The report concludes that firms "require an intelligent, controlled and well-planned approach to delivering secure and sustainable growth of their virtual environments" in order to reap the benefits of virtualisation.

Hardware vendor Hitachi has recently announced on MSN Money Central that a robust virtualised network deployment can allow businesses to "simplify their infrastructure, reduce cost and risk".
