Britain leading Europe in IT, telecommunications and electronics

With an IT, telecommunications and digital consumer electronics (ICT) market worth 152 billion euros (£121 billion), the UK is leading the rest of Europe in terms of revenue, it has been revealed. Forecasts by the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO) should value the European market at a total of 761 billion euros by the end of the year, Computer Weekly reports. IT is said to be outstripping telecoms across the continent, with an overall growth rate of 4.3 per cent, compared to two per cent for telecoms. EITO chair Bruno Lamborghini explained Britain's performance was down to "by far the largest investments in the EU" in outsourcing. He added: "Similar activities in other countries are often still carried out within companies, and consequently do not appear in the market statistics.” Fast broadband connections were also said to be "indispensable" to companies. The European Commission has recently approved £3.4 million of public funding to improve network infrastructure in Scotland to ensure more people can access broadband in the country.
